Alpine snowboarder and Steamboat Springs local Walker Overstake nabbed three silver medals at the Junior World Championships in Folgaria, Italy over the weekend.

The 19-year old competed in mixed-team parallel slalom with Akina Kizuka, men’s parallel giant slalom and men’s parallel slalom.

The duo was seeded seventh following the qualification round for mixed-team parallel slalom. They marched to the finals by besting teams from the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Germany. They then met another team from the Czech Republic who out-dueled them for the gold.

Overstake was seeded fourth in parallel giant slalom. He dominated Koreans Minjae Kim and Jaemin Park in the opening rounds by 2.4 and 1.24 seconds, respectively. He then bested Tommy Rabanser of Italy by 1.3 seconds to qualify for the final. Russian Illia Khurtin was Overstake’s finals opponent, and Khurtin was victorious by 0.78 seconds.

He was seeded second In parallel slalom. In the opening round he narrowly squeaked Ondrej Tulach of the Czech Republic by 0.05 seconds. He then dominated Anatol Kulpinski of Poland by 3.94 seconds, and avenged his loss to Khurtin by 0.90 seconds. In the final, Rabanser got the better of Overstake by 0.93 seconds.

Overstake finished the season ranked 37th on the World Cup circuit for alpine snowboarding. He had a World Cup podium on Jan. 24 in mixed-team parallel giant slalom in Simonhoehe, Austria with Iris Pflum.

Alpine snowboarding has been on the decline in recent years. Following the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics the United States Ski and Snowboard Association shutdown its alpine snowboarding program, precipitating the decline.
