Training exercise simulates wildfire south of Yampa

Editor’s note: A wildfire reported on emergency radio communications south of Yampa at mid-afternoon Wednesday proved to be a training exercise. A corrected version of the original newspaper article appears below.

A training exercise conducted Wednesday simulated how emergency personnel might respond to a wildfire south of Yampa that would involve 200-300 campers being evacuated from the area.

The training exercise involved a supposed male suspect starting the fire in the area of Routt County Road 7. Radio communications then noted that law enforcement lost track of the subject in question “up the road.”

In the training exercise, emergency communications at around 2:04 p.m. indicated that a bathroom structure near a campsite caught fire and was “fully involved.” First responders called the Oak Creek Fire Protection District to bring a water tender to the area at around 2:06 p.m., adding that the U.S. Forest Service couldn’t provide ground crews to respond to the fire. The training exercise then simulated a call for air service aid from Grand Junction at 2:07 p.m.
