The Routt County Weed Program will host its annual Noxious Weed Day event 8 a.m. to noon May 31. The event provides advice, weed identification assistance and free appropriate chemicals to treat invasive weeds.

The free, drop-in event aims to assist residents with calibration of sprayers and noxious weed management education. The event will take place at 2300 County Shop Road in Steamboat Springs.

Due to the early arrival of spring runoff this year, and in an effort to encourage integrated weed management, residents are advised to mechanically mow or weed whack whitetop infestations regularly when buds begin to form, but before flowers can mature. This will force the plants to use root reserves to regrow, stress the plant and allow more active translocation of herbicide to the roots when applied to regrowth.

To receive free premixed herbicide, residents must bring a clean and functioning handheld or backpack sprayer and wear appropriate personal protective gear including long pants and sleeves, gloves, shoes with socks, and eye protection.

For more information, visit Co.routt.co.us/216/Weed-Program, where a Noxious Weed Management Pocket Guide is available.

For larger projects, the Routt County Conservation District has a 200-gallon pull-behind weed sprayer for rent. For medium projects, the CSU Extension office has a backpack and ATV sprayer for rent.
