North Routt Community Charter School has named veteran charter administrator Marquez Elem as interim head of school for the remainder of the 2025-26 academic year, according to a Dec. 19 email from the NRCCS board to families that included a message from Elem.

A Chicago native with more than 25 years in education, Elem has served as a teacher, principal, school chief and regional director supervising a portfolio of elementary charter schools.

He holds a doctorate in educational leadership and community organizations from the American College of Education and previously helped evaluate charter applications for Chicago Public Schools. He has also recently helped open a public charter high school in rural Mississippi.

“I am honored to join such a vibrant and dedicated community. I am even more excited to immerse myself in the rituals and routines that have long been established,” wrote Elem in his message to community members. “I am passionate and intentional about fostering a supporting and engaging learning environment for all our educational community. My goal is to ensure that we actualize our mission.”

“I look forward to getting to know each of you and working together to make this a truly meaningful academic year,” he added.

Elem will begin as interim head of school on Dec. 31.
