Thousands of runners are expected to take to the roads north of Steamboat Springs on Sunday, June 7, for the 45th annual Steamboat Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K, presented by the Steamboat Springs Chamber, according to a Tuesday news release.
The race courses follow Routt County Road 129 along the Elk River, passing through ranchland and mountain scenery before finishing in downtown Steamboat. Organizers say the longtime event draws participants, volunteers and spectators from across the region and beyond, continuing a tradition that has spanned more than four decades.
All races will end downtown, prompting a series of road closures and traffic changes throughout the day Sunday.
Westbound Lincoln Avenue will be closed between Fifth and 12th streets, with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction using the eastbound side of U.S. Highway 40.
Additional closures include Fifth St. between Lincoln Avenue and Oak Street from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the 10K start, and Sixth St. between Lincoln and Oak from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for race activities and vendor areas.
Motorists traveling on Routt County Road 129 should expect delays, increased traffic and the presence of runners and support vehicles. Detours will be in place, including pilot car escorts for some northbound traffic and reroutes for southbound drivers.
A section of C.R. 129 near the racecourse will be restricted to participants and authorized vehicles. Traffic control personnel will be stationed throughout the area to assist with directions.
Organizers are also seeking volunteers for race weekend. To sign up to volunteer, visit SteamboatMarathon.com or email marathon@steamboatchamber.com.
