Sailors hockey wins two straight over weekend
The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team won two games this week, starting with a 4-2 victory over Standley Lake on Friday, Feb. 4.
The Sailors are now 8-5-1 and ranked No. 4
The Gators took the lead with a goal just 29 seconds into the first period. Steamboat answered with two in the second from Tanner Hamilton and Andrew Kempers. Goals from Max VanDeren and Hamilton cushioned the lead to 4-1. Standley Lake added one more to conclude the scoring.
The next day, Steamboat hosted Kent Denver in a wild senior-night matchup.
The Sun Devils scored first on a power play opportunity less than five minutes into the game. Goalie Indi Kretzschmar kept the visitors at bay through the entire second period, and Sailors Max Kenney and Kael McCarty scored to give Steamboat a 2-1 lead.
The Sun Devils came out in the third swinging, scoring twice in the first five minutes to take a 3-2 lead. Three minutes later, Steamboat’s Walker Ripley scored off a pass from Andrew Kempers on a power play to tie the game.
The teams stayed tied through the final whistle, prompting overtime.
Steamboat didn’t take long to win. A goal from Landon Ripley gave Steamboat the victory just 1:40 into the period.
The Sailors host Dakota Ridge on Friday, Feb. 11.
