Wrestlers wrap up early-season schedule with West Grand tournament
Steamboat Springs — All three Routt County high school wrestling teams competed at the West Grand Invitational in Kremmling on Saturday. It was the final competition for each team before the holiday break.
Steamboat Springs High School and Soroco High School will return to the mat Jan. 9 at the Eagle Valley Tournament, while Hayden will head to the Vernal Tournament of Champions on Jan. 9 and 10.
Below is a weight-by-weight breakdown of Saturday’s West Grand Invite.
106 pounds
Steamboat’s Colton Pasternak went 3-0 with three pins for the title, defeating Hayden’s Taylor Powell in the finals.
113 pounds
Steamboat’s Kyle Spognardi took second in the round robin, while Hayden’s Jake Planansky took third.
120 pounds
Hayden’s Garrett Murphy lost to eventual bracket champ Cameron Wolters, of Beuna Vista, in the semifinals.
126 pounds
Hayden’s Judd Magee went 3-0 in actual matches for first. He defeated Steamboat’s Colten Crawford in the finals via fall in 6 minutes, 26 seconds. Magee also beat Soroco’s Kane Williams in the semifinals, a 10-1 major decision.
132 pounds
Steamboat’s Dakota Thvedt took third after falling in the semifinals to eventual bracket champion Anthony Quintana, of Beuna Vista. Hayden’s Andrew Winfield and Soroco’s Lane Martindale both fell in the consolation semifinals.
138 pounds
Soroco’s Dalton Ray took third, beating Steamboat’s Ethan Labriola in the consolation finals. Both fell in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket.
145 pounds
Steamboat’s Miles Buchan lost in the consolation semifinals after winning his first-round match.
152 pounds
Steamboat’s Matthew Hansen pinned his way to the title, going 3-0. Soroco’s Jace Logan fell in the semifinals but rallied to take third place, a 2-0 decision over Buena Vista’s Jackson Baroni.
160 pounds
Steamboat’s Hayden Johnson pinned his first two opponents to make the finals, but ultimately fell to Wyoming’s Thatcher Spiering in the championship, a fall in 3:30. Hayden’s Tommy Wade lost to Johnson in the semifinals.
170 pounds
No wrestlers for any teams.
182 pounds
Steamboat’s Marley Carlson took fifth in the round robin.
195 pounds
Hayden’s Christian Carson continued his dominance, going 4-0 to win the round robin. He won all four of his matches via pin in less than 90 seconds.
220 pounds
Hayden’s Hunter Rummel took third, Steamboat’s Mo Munoz fourth in the four-man round robin.
285 pounds
Hayden’s Lebo Armendarez was sixth out of six wrestlers.
