Tigers score season’s first win

Three Tigers scored in double digits Friday night as the Hayden High School girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season, knocking off the Olathe junior varsity team in the Meeker Cowboy Shoot Out.

Hayden won, 39-27.

“We were very excited,” coach Michelle Wilkie said. “It wasn’t a crazy high scoring game, but we won, so we felt good.”

Grace Wilkie scored 11 for the Tigers, while Darian Murphy and Emma Johnson each scored 10. Kyra Bennett added eight.

The team built a solid lead early, then held on to it throughout by keeping a lid on turnovers and shooting well from the free throw line.

“Darian had some amazing steals, too,” Michelle Wilkie said. “She and Grace ran the floor beautifully, and we had lots of fast breaks, quick passes, so that was nice.”

The team, 1-1, plays its final game in the tournament today against Nucla.
