Soroco girls fall in Meeker

Turnovers sank the Soroco girls according to coach David Bruner. The Rams lost their first game of the year, falling Friday against Class 4A’s Montezuma Cortez, 55-46, in the Meeker Cowboy Shoot Out.

“It was a good game, but we turned the ball over too many times,” Bruner said. “We did some good things, but we also showed our youth.”

Briana Peterson had 16 points to lead the squad. DaKota Bruner scored nine.

It was a close game throughout, but Montezuma Cortez maintained a narrow advantage and sank its free throws when Soroco turned to fouls late.

“We battled, and I was pleased with our effort,” David Bruner said. “Their pressure hurt us some, but we also missed some point blank shots. It was a physical battle, and our girls stepped up and played with them, but they made some of the plays we didn’t down the stretch.”

Soroco plays again today against Mesa Ridge’s junior varsity squad.
