Soroco boys win in OT

It took one overtime period, but the Soroco boys basketball team won its season opener Friday night, defeating Platte Canyon, 84-77.

The Rams had three players score 20 points or more and bounced back after the Huskies tied the game at the buzzer in regulation.

“I’m very proud of the boys,” Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said. “They realized they can trust everyone on the team. Everyone contributed to the win tonight, and that’s really big heading into the season.”

Seniors Warren Hayes and Chance Beaty each scored 21 points, while sophomore Ben Kelley had 20.

Platte Canyon senior Hank Bode led all scorers with 35, and it was one of his shots that tied the game late, a 3-pointer as time expired. Soroco battled back, though.

Shawn Hayes said it was rebounding, defense and ball movement that made the difference.

“Schuyler Carlson and Ben, then Brandon Veilleux, they really controlled the rebound side of it,” he said. “Then we moved the ball well and penetrated and started playing inside out.”
