Soroco boys knock off Hayden

The Soroco High School boys basketball team took Round 1 of the intra-county rivalry against Hayden, winning Saturday in the final round of the Meeker Cowboy Shoot Out, 60-20.

Schuyler Carlson led the Rams with 13 points, while Warren Hayes had 12.

Hayes was selected to the all-tournament team and named the tournament’s most valuable player.

“We got to play a lot of people. Everyone scored tonight,” Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said. “We were able to look at some different rotations.”

Hayden coach Gerrard Geis said he was pleased with his team in the game, adding that, despite an 0-3 record in the Meeker tournament, his Tigers’ took a lot out of it.

“There was no quit, just a lot of heart,” he said. “They played their best and made some great improvements in a whole bunch of areas we were worried about.”

The team lost Thursday to the Fruita Monument junior varsity squad, 70-22. Friday, it lost to the Moffat County junior varsity team, 63-14.

Daylon Frentress led the team in scoring in two of those games, Thursday with seven and Saturday with eight. Peyton Spafford scored seven to lead the team Friday.

Soroco next plays at home Friday against Rangely.

Round 2 of the series between Hayden and Soroco on Jan. 8 is the next game on the schedule for the Tigers.
