Soroco boys fall to Meeker

Soroco High School boys coach Shawn Hayes said Friday night was a learning experience for his basketball team as it took on its first loss of the season, 62-52, against Meeker playing in the Meeker Cowboy Shoot Out.

“It showed us where we’re at,” Hayes said. “We played a really good team, a well-coached team, and we learned a lot.”

The key lesson, he said, is the team needs to maintain focus on its game inside the paint.

The Rams trailed by only one after the first quarter, but the Cowboys built a lead of about 10, then managed to maintain it for the rest of the game.

Ben Kelley scored 15 to lead Soroco, while Warren Hayes had 11.

“We weren’t able to match their physicality and intensity throughout the night,” Shawn Hayes said. “We couldn’t maintain that intensity and couldn’t establish an inside game like we’ve been able to do the last three games.”

The Rams, 3-1, will play their final game of the tournament Saturday against Hayden, which lost its opening game of the season Thursday to the Fruita Monument junior varsity squad, 70-22, in Meeker.
