Rams pick up win No. 1

It all went according to plan Thursday as the Soroco High School girls basketball team kicked off its season against Nucla in the Meeker Cowboy Shootout.

The Rams were aggressive and effective on offense, opportunistic and staunch on defense and came away winners, 56-28.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well, but you can’t complain when you score 56 points,” coach David Bruner said. “We’ll shoot a lot better down the road, but I was pleased with the first game.”

DaKota Bruner poured in 20 points, while Briana Peterson had 12 and Kali Constine 10.

David Bruner said equally big contributions came from elsewhere on the roster. Junior Morgan George and sophomore Charlee Veilleux came up big on defense.

“They did a great job,” Bruner said. “They really shut down two of their really good players.”

The win sets the Rams into the tournament’s semifinals, where they’ll play at 6 p.m. Friday against Cortez in Meeker.
