North Park Snow Dog Race in Walden set for this weekend
The second annual North Park Snow Dog Race takes off from State Forest State Park on Saturday and Sunday in Walden.
The two-day event, hosted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Rocky Mountain Dog Sled Club, will run on the Gould Loop Trail and parts of the Ranger Lakes Nature Trail, featuring distances between 2-12 miles.
“We are so excited to partner with Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club and host this event again this year,” said Tony Johnson, the State Forest State Park Senior Ranger, in a statement.
“Last year’s event was a huge success, and it showcases that regardless of the season, there is always an opportunity to enjoy the Colorado outdoors at State Forest State Park,” he added.
Races begin at 9 a.m. from the Gould Community Center on both days and most events will involve dog sleds while one is dedicated to skijoring.
“The goal of RMDSC is to share knowledge and love for the sport of dog sledding,” said Katie Day with Rocky Mountain Dog Sled Club, in a news release. “Dogs and mushers are training up for this race with anticipation, enthusiasm, and excitement of showing off a season’s worth of accomplishments.”
Attendance at the event is free, but visitors must have a valid $12 daily park pass or an annual Keep Colorado Wild pass to enter the park.
Participants are encouraged to arrive early due to limited parking at the Gould Community Center. Additional parking is available at the Moose Visitor Center, which is a half-mile hike from the Community Center.
Questions about the event can be directed to State Forest State Park at 970-723-8366.
