West Routt’s Ride the Cog to benefit Hayden Heritage Center

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Hayden Heritage Center has opened registration for its 2019 Hayden Ride the Cog, which will be held Saturday, May 18. The event takes advantage of the Cog’s impressive climb along with the network of gravel roads surrounding Hayden. This year marks the ride’s sixth anniversary.

The ride features three options including:

  • A 31-mile scenic “Gravel Grinder” that starts with a challenging ride on pavement up the Cog then circles west on gravel roads around Elkhead Reservoir.
  • A 26-mile “Mud Route,” which is almost entirely on gravel and dirt, starts with a spectacular climb up the Middle Cog then heads along remote backcountry routes including the homestead of Ferry Carpenter.
  • A 43-mile “Combined Ride,” which features the best of both routes.

The combined route starts at 9 a.m. while the Gravel Grinder and Mud Route begin at 9:30 a.m. A short and easy family ride at 11 a.m. lets the youngest riders participate with bicycle decoration and a fun obstacle course.

To register for the ride, visit haydenheritagecenter.org. Registration will also be offered beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event at the Hayden Heritage Center. The cost is $50 per rider.

Registration includes the Ride the Cog after-party at the Historic Hayden Granary catered by Embers Wood Fired Pizza, two beverage tickets and live music by 3Wire. Non-riders can attend the after-party for $15.
