Steamboat Sailors tennis face tough competition at Regis, Loveland
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Sailors boys tennis team had a big week on the road, facing off against top-ranked Regis Jesuit High School and competing in the Loveland Invitational Tournament.
At Loveland on Friday, Steamboat’s Andy Schuiling went undefeated in the tournament. The Sailors beat Loveland High School 6-1 and lost to Poudre High School 3-4 and Fort Collins 2-5.
“All of our players got better as the tournament went along,” coach Bill Conway said. “They showed growth each match. No. 1 doubles Gabe Rabanal and John Hannaway played some of the best tennis I’ve seen from them.”
The Sailors fell 0-7 to Regis on Thursday, which is favored to win the state 5A title this fall.
Schuiling lost to Morgan Schiling, 4-6, 5-7, and Ethan Paulus lost to Kosta Garger 1-6, 0-6.
In other matches, Gabe Rabanal and John Hanaway lost to Eimilio Gonzalalez-Craig and Evan Nuss 0-6,0-6; Kaden Hovey and Jacob Gilberston lost to Grigor Karakelya and Phillip Allbright 0-6,0-6; Kyle Nilsson and Brydan McDougal lost to Matthew Rau and Rene DelBarco 1-6 2-6; and Dylan Dietrich and Kyle Saunders lost to Sean Kerzmarczyk and Thomas Williams 1-6 0-6.
Steamboat will compete in the Western Slope Tournament on Friday, Sept. 7. The Sailors are at home hosting Fruita Monument on Sept. 15.
