The end of the season brought a few more strong results from Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freeskiers. The athletes wrapped up their spring with a trip to the USA Snowboard and Freeski Association championships in Winter Park.

He may not have ended up with the highest result, but coach Tony Lodico said Payton McElhiney laid down one of the team’s best performances.

McElhiney took a serious fall in the halfpipe, crashing on the deck, then into the pipe in training.

“He was in obvious pain as he dropped in for his finals training run,” Lodico said. “Payton then focused, ignored the pain and put down two great finals runs, just missing the podium.”

He finished fourth in the men’s open class. He was also 19th in slopestyle.

Steamboat did come away with two podium finishes. Tessa Holshue was second in the skier women’s 16-18 division, while Ryan Holshue was third in the skier men’s 19-29 division.

Liam Baxter had a strong week in the skier men’s 13-15 division, placing fifth in halfpipe and eighth in slopestyle. Kai Doyle, in the same age group, was sixth in slopestyle.

Josie Seibel was ninth in slopestyle in the skier women’s 13-15 class, while Cale McCarthy was 12th in halfpipe and 18th in slopestyle, and Wiley Wagner 16th in halfpipe, both in the skier boys 10-12 class.

The season’s still not quite over for some of those athletes. Baxter, McElhiney and Jacobs shined bright enough to get the chance to work at the U.S. Freeskiing Project Gold Camp in May at Mammoth Resort in California.
