High School sports weekend preview for March 25 and 26
Steamboat boys lacrosse
4 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (1-1) vs. Vail Mountain (1-1)
11 a.m. Saturday: Steamboat vs. Battle Mountain (1-1)
Despite their first loss of the season last weekend to Windsor, the Sailors jumped up two spots in this week’s poll to No. 5 in Class 4A. Windsor, then No. 9, is up to No. 2. The voters remain confident in Steamboat, which defeated Fruita Monument in its opener before a competitive loss to the Wizards. Now, the Sailors jump back into league play with two home games this weekend. Both weekend opponents also played games Wednesday and should be a good test.
Steamboat girls lacrosse
4 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (2-2) at Eagle Valley (1-2)
11 a.m. Saturday: Steamboat vs. Telluride (0-1), in Grand Junction
The Steamboat girls were supposed to host Summit Wednesday, but weather across the state postponed the match. Now, the Sailors turn their attention toward Eagle Valley and Telluride, both of which are off to rough starts this season. Steamboat, meanwhile, is off to the best start it’s seen in a couple of years and is coming off a big league win over Durango last weekend. A 4-2 start might have seemed like little more than a dream before the season started, but it’s very much a possibility for the Sailors now.
Steamboat girls soccer
Noon Saturday: Steamboat (5-0) at Moffat County (0-4)
Expectations are usually high for Steamboat soccer teams, but the girls recently took things to another level. By finally beating rival Battle Mountain on Tuesday — in blowout fashion — the league, and possibly more, looks to be theirs for the taking. They’ll step out of league play Saturday, however, to face a struggling Moffat County team. Steamboat could very well be favored to win every game from here on out, although that return trip to Battle Mountain on April 15 is one to circle.
11 a.m. Saturday: Steamboat (2-3) vs. Delta (2-2), in Rifle
It’s still too early to pass judgment on the Sailors baseball team. They followed a pair of blowout losses to Rifle with a win over Moffat County on Tuesday in the first half of a scheduled doubleheader, the second half of which was canceled due to the weather. Steamboat will now face Delta in Rifle on Saturday, in what will be Delta’s first league games.
Steamboat girls tennis
3 p.m. Friday: Steamboat at Fossil Ridge
9 a.m. Saturday: Steamboat at Thompson Valley
Weather permitting, the Steamboat tennis team hopes to travel to the Front Range this weekend for a pair of matches. The Sailors last match was postponed due to the weather, so they haven’t seen the court since playing in a tournament at Grand Junction on March 11 and 12.
