Good leads Steamboat skiers at World Juniors

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club skier Jasper Good made good on his opportunity at the World Junior Skiing Championships in Rasnov, Romania, recording strong performances to help lead a pack of United States skiers, a handful of whom are fellow Steamboat Springs athletes.

Good was 11th in the week’s first Nordic combined event, then 12th on the second.

He combined with fellow Nordic combined athletes Jared Shumate and Stephen Shumann, both of Park City, Utah, and Ben Loomis, from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to finish sixth in a four-man relay.

“This is my last year of world juniors. I was very excited to see where I stack up against my age group,” Good wrote in an email. 
He took a break from the Continental Cup circuit for the event.

“My performance in the first event was a solid representation of my average,” he said. “I have been consistent on the hill, however, I didn’t feel as if I had a very strong race. That said, I did have a solid performance that I’m happy with.”

Koby Vargas also competed in the Nordic combined events, logging 32nd- and 43rd-place finishes.

Elsewhere, Logan Sankey also got in on the action for the Winter Sports Club.

Sankey joined a team of four U.S. women’s special jumpers and placed 30th overall in a two-jump event off a K90 hill.

“This year’s snow is scary, at best,” Good wrote. “I will be leaving world juniors this year happy that the organizers were able to pull off the events. Although it is not ideal conditions, I will take what I can get, as everyone else is dealing with the same conditions, and it’s better than not competing at all.”
