Local junior skier takes first place
Junior skier Ethan Johnson, 15, of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club took advantage of a chance to ski with the big boys Saturday and skated to first place in his division of the WinterStart Nordic combined competition at Howelsen Hill. Matt Dayton of the U.S. Ski Team and Breckenridge won the senior division in impressive fashion. The classy field included a half-dozen members of the U.S. World Cup B Team, as well as a similar number of the Czechoslovakian World Cup B Team.

Local jumpers shine at Utah Winter Games
Maybe the competition wasn't at the World Cup level, but Steamboat Springs' Brendan Doran was happy to pick up a pair of wins at the Olympic Jumps during the Utah Winter Games. "A win is a win," Doran said. "When you're sitting at the top of the hill, you think, 'Hey, I won here before,' and it doesn't really matter who you were up against."

Cross-country skiers find some first places
Six local skiers cruised to No. 1 finishes in the nordic combined cross-country races at the Western Regional Championships in Steamboat Springs over the weekend. United States Ski Team member Todd Lodwick placed first in a 7.5 kilometer race in the men's senior class, finishing in 18:03.0. Lodwick was followed by fellow local U.S. skiers John Spillane, Matt Dayton and Bill DeMong. Local skier Matt Cook was the No. 5 finisher in the men's senior class.
