As a reporting intern, Katy Pickens will cover arts and entertainment, along with general assignment reporting, for the the Steamboat Pilot & Today. She concluded her sophomore year at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, in May and is majoring in environmental studies and urban studies.
She’s contributed to her high school publication in Illinois and writes for the Brown Daily Herald, serving as the college newspaper’s metro editor and a senior staff writer before that. She also contributes to a weekly podcast, “The Bruno Brief.”
She is most proud of her work on a series that focused on gentrification and development on the East Side of Providence. She said she hopes to eventually combine her writing skills and degree to earn a job in environmental journalism.
When she’s not writing she likes to get out into nature, read, play soccer, guitar and occasionally likes to knit and crochet.
Pickens grew up in Chicago, but has had family ties to Steamboat since the 1980s, including her aunt, Nancy Merrill, who is the co-founder and President of the Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition.
Pickens has been visiting the Yampa Valley almost every Christmas and summer.
“I love Steamboat because the people are incredible and the nature and things to do are so much fun,” she said.
