Vanessa and Yariela Avitia: Thank you to all who helped following school bus incident

My name is Vanessa Avitia, I’m a fifth-grader at Strawberry Park Elementary. On March 25, me and my younger sister Yariela were riding the school bus home like we normally do every Monday. Unfortunately that day we were involved in a car accident, and our bus driver George Morris had a medical emergency.

I want to thank Rob Harvey for stopping and checking all of us to make sure we were safe and for assisting our bus driver, Matt Helm, who stopped to checked on us and drove us home, and the high schooler — with blond hair and wearing a red hoodie — who doesn’t ride our bus but stopped to calm all of us down.

I want to thank the Steamboat Springs Police Department, Fire Rescue and the EMS Department for responding and helping our bus driver. My sister and I were really scared, but we felt safe because of all the people who made sure we were all safe and assisted our loved bus driver.

Even though this was a scary experience, I am thankful that our bus driver is OK, and I pray for George to recover soon and come back because we miss him a lot. Thank you Steamboat Springs community for always coming together when somebody is in need.

Sincerely,

Vanessa and Yariela Avitia
