Letter: Supporting Ukraine is good policy for U.S.
The GOP should enthusiastically support Ukraine. President Ronald Reagan called the USSR the “Evil Empire.” Reagan and Margaret Thatcher would be galvanizing the free world into action, probably more so than Biden has done. A weakened Russia is a victory for the free world, and we don’t send our sons and daughters to war. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
The war has exposed Russia’s weakness. Putin has decapitated his mercenary army for an attempted coup, which his military did not confront. His troops have been decimated on the battlefield. Putin’s war machine is so devastated he is going to lowly North Korea to get weapons and ammo. Putin’s ruthlessness and weakness is being exposed to the entire world daily.
Ukraine would have been quickly conquered had it not been for the aid it received from the U.S. and our allies. Certainly, the whole world is watching. If the U.S. and the rest of the free world had let Russia attack unopposed, China would have already attacked Taiwan. And Chairman Kim Jong Un’s trigger finger is always itching. The only reason these aggressors have shown forbearance is because of the response of the free world, led by America.
The $25 billion requested for Ukrainian assistance amounts to less than 3% of our military budget — money that is directly being spent fighting Russia’s aggression. The U.S. and the world cannot spend military money in a more effective way. We should urge our representatives to put aside partisanship on this matter. This war is embarrassing Putin and causing other antagonists to reconsider. The U.S. needs to continue to support the Ukrainian people to the fullest extent so Ukraine can defeat Russia and join NATO. It is the most conservative thing we can do.
