Letter: Please consider supporting the local Meals on Wheels program
As I made a dash to grab my new, very large blue patio umbrella flying away in the wind did I ever believe I’d be painfully waiting for a volunteer with a hot meal at my front door this fall? I laughed telling of my Mary Poppins flight. But the laughing stopped as the pain exploded up and down my back. I then needed to find a spine doctor and transportation.
I knew of Meals on Wheels, but that was for others, not me. However, my freezer was near empty, and I had to make choices. It was difficult for me, a lifelong independent person, as helping others was my profession, to admit I needed help.
Meals on Wheels came to my rescue with hot meals and transportation, and this helped ease my pain with no dirty dishes or food prep to do.
The organization started in the United Kingdom and spread to Philadelphia after World War II in 1954. They started by delivering meals to those in need and veterans. This Thanksgiving, others and I will be grateful as we open our door. Please, give money and volunteer to help the Routt County Council on Aging, if possible. Many will thank you.
