Read to your young child every day. The importance of taking time each day to read with your young child may not be evident right away, but by reading with your child, you are preparing him or her for a successful future in school and life in general.

According to ColorínColorado, all parents can be helpful in their children’s literacy development, regardless of their language, education or literacy level. Parents who speak little or no English can contribute to their children’s education in valuable ways.

English language learners benefit when they develop solid literacy skills in their first language before learning to read in a second one. Through Spanish, they are developing key language and literacy skills that may enable them to become excellent readers in English.

Some ways to improve oral language skills are storytelling, reading wordless picture books, singing songs and engaging in meaningful conversation. Reading books in Spanish and making frequent trips to the public library will greatly benefit your child.

ColorínColorado has a few thoughts for getting started.

• To get a free library card, bring in one proof of identification that has your current address, such as a driver’s license or phone bill. Bud Werner Memorial Library offers library card applications in Spanish.

• See that your children get their own library cards as soon as possible so they can check out their own books — it’s a big step for children and young adults.

• Libraries provide year-round storytimes. Kelly Schaeffer offers an excellent storytime in Spanish and English at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays.

• Bud Werner Memorial Library also has books on CDs, Internet access, movies and educational DVDs, games and computers you can use. Children can check out a book on CD so they can listen and follow along.

• There are usually summer reading programs at the library. This can be an important and fun way to keep kids reading through the summer, which will help them from falling behind once they go back to school in the fall.
