Youth hockey gets under way
October 19, 2005
Steamboat Springs — This weekend saw the return of hockey to Steamboat. After summer camps, preseason clinics and team tryouts, players were able to get back to playing actual games. The Bantam A (13- to 14-years-old) team traveled to Vail on Saturday, while the Squirt C (9-10) team visited Pueblo.
Eric Owen and Philip Riley turned away 19 shots in a 4-0 victory against Vail. Vladan Chase (two goals), Jack Verploeg and Regan Walton netted goals for Steamboat. Coaches for the team were particularly pleased with the play of defensemen Brian Moore, David Lea, Regan Walton and Justin Anderson, who limited the chances Vail was able to create.
The Squirt C team held Pueblo scoreless until the final 33 seconds of the third period in a 4-1 victory. Trent Trask opened the scoring in the first period. Will Burrow added a first-period goal along with two third-period goals for the hat trick. Taylor Zabel and Ryan Musselman were credited with assists on Burrow’s third goal. Brandon Martin played strong in goal saving 13 of the 14 shots he faced.
The Sunday contest was closer, with Steamboat pulling out a 5-3 victory. Trask faced nine shots in goal, turning away six. Grant Verploeg, Burrow (two goals), Koby Bishop and Kaleb Van Arsdale netted scores for Steamboat. Peter White chipped in two assists to round out the scoring.
Both coaches were proud of how well their teams played because they were able to conduct just one practice as a team before starting the season. Zamboni breakdowns at Howelsen Ice Arena caused the team evaluations and tryouts to be extended, cutting into many practice times.
Midget Major A
The Midget Major A team hosts Aspen on Saturday. Both Bantam teams compete this weekend with the A team traveling to Colorado Springs, and the B team hosting Pueblo on Saturday and Sunday. Pee Wee A hosts two games against Providence, while the B team travels to Pueblo on Sunday.
