Yampa Town Board OKs water, sewer rate increases

— In an effort to keep up with rising costs, the Yampa Town Board unanimously approved an increase in monthly water and sewer rates at its monthly meeting Wednesday. The rates will increase by $2.60 each, bringing monthly water charges to $28.60 and sewer charges to $31.60.

Public Works Director Eric Berry said the rate increases reflect rising costs of maintenance and treatment chemicals.

“We’re just keeping up with our cost,” Berry said. “For (the town), this is not a significant increase. For the last 10 years I’ve been here, we’ve incrementally increased our costs.”

The new rates will not take effect until the March billing period, Town Clerk Janet Ray said.

The most recent increase went through in January 2009, when the board approved an increase from $23 to $26 for the water rates and from $23 to $29 for sewer rates.

The base water rate includes usage of 5,000 gallons of water a month from September through April. The rate includes usage of 15,000 gallons a month for May through August. Water usage more than the base rate will be charged at $1.65 per thousand gallons.

Berry said rates typically increase about every three years but that raising them after two years was a necessary budgetary measure.

He said the town does not expect to need to raise rates again next year.
