Workshop encourages locals to record family stories

There are as many reasons to write a memoir as there are ways to start one.

Not all of them are interesting – Johnny Cash begins his otherwise fascinating life story with a detailed history of his family lineage. But all memoirs have a common purpose: to preserve history the way the writer remembers it.

Today, Routt County residents are invited to learn the basics of memoir writing in a workshop at Tread of Pioneers Museum.

“One of the main concerns is that after a generation or two, if it’s not written down or recorded, your history or your family’s history is lost,” museum Executive Director Candice Lombardo said.

With “From Memories to Memoirs,” local writer Susan de Wardt will provide basic writing tips and tools for recording the recent or distant past. The workshop, now in its second year, is one hour long and has two sessions – at noon and at 5:30 p.m. It is free to Routt County residents.

“The history of the area is so unique, and we really hope that people will be inspired to write their family histories,” Lombardo said. Lombardo encourages locals to write down the stories they’ve grown up with so they can be passed down.

Memoirs from families with local ties that embody the history of Routt County will be added to the museum’s Lufkin Library and Research Center, Lombardo said, for the benefit of future generations of researchers.
