Woman with possible broken leg airlifted from Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area in North Routt

NORTH ROUTT — A 54-year-old woman with a possible broken leg was airlifted from the Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area on Sunday morning.

Routt County Search and Rescue, North Routt Fire Protection District and Classic Air Medical were paged to an injured hiker near Gold Creek Lake around 6:08 a.m.

Search and Rescue Incident Commander Kristia Check-Hill said the Steamboat Springs woman twisted her ankle while hiking the Gold Creek Lake trail. Classic Air Medical picked up the woman before Search and Rescue and North Routt EMS got to her location. She was transported to UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center, Check-Hill said.

At 9:49 a.m. Saturday, volunteers received an accidental call for help from a SPOT GPS tracking device. A man at a ranch near Steamboat Lake State Park had a SPOT tracker in his pack. Something in his pack inadvertently pressed the button that pages authorities for help, according to Search and Rescue President Darrel Levingston.

Rescuers received notification that the man did not need assistance before they got to the ranch.
