Woman suspected of embezzling funds

Danie Harrelson

— A 50-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of embezzling money from an Oak Creek business.

Poet Lee Morningstar of Oak Creek is facing a theft charge. Routt County Sheriff John Warner said Morningstar admitted taking money from the place where she worked to pay bills.

About $1,700 was in the checking account of the Oak Creek business Morningstar worked for. She took the money and used it to pay off some of her debts.

She did not inform her employer she had drained and closed the account.

Her employer alerted police and told them she had access to the account.

The Routt County Sheriff’s Office handled the case.

Morningstar told police she needed the money to pay her bills.

“She confessed to everything,” Warner said. “She admitted she did not have authorization to do it.”

Morningstar was released Thursday from the Routt County Jail on $5,000 bond.
