Steamboat Springs — A West Routt County woman suffered head injuries when her Ford Explorer drove off U.S. 40 and into Dream Island Mobile Home Community, knocking over a cluster mailbox and hitting two cars.

Steamboat Springs Police Sgt. Paul Timmons said at about 5 p.m. Thursday, Daisy Epps, 78, lost control of her vehicle while driving eastbound on U.S. 40, just before the entrance to Dream Island.

The Explorer traveled 399 feet after it reportedly hit a light pole, careened down a steep embankment, drove between numerous trees, broke through a wooden fence at the front of the Golden Q bar, toppled a cluster mailbox, side-swiped a white Jeep Wrangler and collided with a black Toyota Tacoma pickup, Timmons said.

Witnesses said the cluster mailbox flew into the air and struck a red Honda Civic, Timmons said.

He added that Epps’ Ford may have had to be going 30 mph to knock over the cluster mailbox, which was secured in a cement foundation.

The Honda, Jeep, Toyota and Epps’ Ford suffered body damage.

Jim Dougherty, owner of the Toyota and Fit for Life health center in Dream Island, said he saw the accident happen.

“I was on my treadmill and I saw (the Explorer) come through the mailbox, ricochet off the Jeep into my Tacoma. Then I called 911,” Dougherty said.

“She was real lucky because a lot of people are in this parking lot,” he said.

Epps suffered minor head injuries and was disoriented after the accident, Timmons said, which could have been the reason she lost control of the Ford.

Epps was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center.
