Woman injured by horse while hunting

A 55-year-old Craig woman was rescued Tuesday afternoon after a horse stepped on her leg on the Continental Divide Trail near Rabbit Ears.

The Routt County Search and Rescue responded to the call about 3 p.m. The woman was hunting with her husband, and one of their horses stepped on her, breaking her lower leg.

The woman was on Trail 1108, about three miles off Buffalo Park Road.

Her husband made the call for help from a cell phone.

About 16 Search and Rescue members and a Routt County paramedic responded to the call, using ATVs and a Stokes rescue basket to rescue the woman. They returned with the woman to the trailhead just before dark, where an ambulance waited, said Search and Rescue President Jamie Neault.

The woman suffered an isolated fracture to the lower part of her leg but she is doing fine, Neault said.

The second Search and Rescue call in two days, Neault, said Tuesday’s rescue took about five hours. On Monday, Search and Rescue was called to the California Park area to help locate a lost hunter.

Officials were worried about the man because he had spent the night away from camp and was said to have been a diabetic without any insulin on him.

The man walked out of the woods shortly after Search and Rescue set up the search area Monday afternoon.
