Woman airlifted to Denver after crash

A Steamboat Springs woman was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon in a head-on collision that closed Colorado Highway 131 for about two hours.

Patricia Williamson, 52, was headed southbound on Colo. 131 south of Oak Creek, near milepost 50, when her Audi drifted into the northbound lane and hit a Dodge Caravan driven by Krista Luciano, 35, of Yampa, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Melissa Remner said.

According to initial reports from the scene, Luciano and two passengers, her 14- and 3-year-old sons, were able to get out of their car and walk around. Williamson, however, was unconscious and trapped in the wreckage of her car.

She was not wearing a seat belt, and no airbag deployed, Remner said.

It took emergency workers about 15 minutes to extricate Williamson. She was then taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center, from which she later was flown to a Denver hospital in serious but stable condition, hospital spokesman Karl Gills said.

Luciano and her sons were taken to YVMC via ambulance, where she was treated and released. Information about her sons was not available.

Luciano was wearing a seat belt and her 3-year-old was in a child safety seat. The 14-year-old boy was sitting in the middle row of the van and was not buckled up, Remner said.

Why Williamson drifted into oncoming traffic has not been determined, Remner said. Charges are pending.
