Babcock doesn't qualify despite 41-5 jump

Melinda Mawdsley

Windy conditions in Kremmling on Tuesday prevented Soroco senior Kory Babcock from prequalifying for the state meet in the triple jump, despite leaping 41 feet, 5 inches.

The event standard in Class 2A this season is 40-9 for the boys. Though Babcock did place first at Tuesday’s tiny West Grand Invitational, his jump couldn’t count toward prequalification for state because of the speed of the wind to his back. Wind gusts faster than 30 mph were reported in Kremmling that day.

“He’s jumping so well,” Rams coach Gary Heide said. “Hopefully, he can do it again Saturday.”

Babcock has two more chances to prequalify at May meets in Moffat County and Kremmling.

Babcock also placed first in the 400 meters Tuesday with a time of 54.5 seconds. Heide said the runners hit a wall of wind and almost came to a stop at the 300-meter mark.

The boys’ 1,600-meter relay team of Trevor Ellis, Carl Remick, Babcock and Andy deGanahl placed first. Ellis recorded his second 55.0 split in the 400 this week. The quartet, already prequalified for state, is aiming for a top result at the Pueblo championships.

“Trevor might be the one to put us over the edge,” Heide said.

DeGanahl picked up first place in the 200 and second in the 100. Ellis placed fifth in the 100, as well.

Soroco’s 400-meter team of Melissa Roy, Jenny Block, Kyla Schmidt and Karli Babcock placed first in 56.2. Block ran in place Nichole Wilson, who was sick, in three of the Rams’ sprint relays.

The sprint medley team finished third, while the 800-meter relay was fourth.

Roy was second in the 100 with a 13.7. Babcock placed fourth in the 400 in 67.5. Colleen Treanor was seventh in the 1,600 meters and fared well in a snowstorm during the 3,200, Heide said.

Jumping against a pretty stiff wind, Schmidt successfully landed a jump of 13-6 1/2, but Heide did not know her official placing because final results were not posted before Soroco left Kremmling late Tuesday.

On the boys’ side, Nick Rangel improved his personal best in the discus with a throw of 109 feet to place sixth. Three of his four throws landed more than 100 feet from the pit. Before Tuesday, he had not thrown the discus more than 90 feet.

Carl Remick was fourth in the 300 hurdles with a 44.6. The 800-meter relay team of Ellis, Tony Iacovetto, Babcock and deGanahl placed second, and the 400-meter relay team of Ellis, Steve Meade, Iacovetto and Matt Cartas was fifth. Cartas also placed in the high jump.

Soroco returns to action Saturday morning at the Vail Christian Invitational in Minturn.
