Law enforcement reports a few slides around Routt County after snowfall

Snow covers the hillsides between Yampa and Phippsburg near Colo. Highway 131 in South Routt County on Thursday morning, after a storm bearing signs of winter passed through the area.

— Snowfall late Wednesday night and Thursday morning caused a few vehicle slides around Routt County, but law enforcement officers said this morning that roads were mostly safe and clear.

Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a slide-off at 10:22 Wednesday night near Steamboat Springs Middle School, at Amethyst and Routt County Road 36. Sheriff’s office receptionist Chris Huffar said there were no injuries and unknown damage.

There were two weather-related incidents on U.S. Highway 40 on Rabbit Ears Pass, but no injuries, said Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott. One, a slide-off near the peak of the pass in Grand County, caused minor damage. The second, a possible slide-off on the western side of the pass, caused unknown damage but no injuries.

Elliott said it’s important for drivers to slow down and allow extra following time on the slushy roads.

“This is the typical time, when we get our first snowstorms, that we have crashes,” he said.

The chain law was in effect on Rabbit Ears Pass this morning, and Elliott said it had been partially lifted by mid-morning, to include only westbound trucks.
