Win slips away from Steamboat hockey

— The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team only just missed out on the chance to make a winning streak.

After winning its first game of the season Saturday, the team fell 4-3 in overtime on the road Monday against Standley Lake.

The Gators got a goal from Nick McCarron 1 minute, 33 seconds into overtime for the comeback victory against the Sailors.

Steamboat trailed 2-0 midway through the second period but used power-play opportunities to get back in the game.

The Sailors got a goal from David Cropper to dig into the lead in the second period, and goals from Jordan Gorr and Luke Borgerding in the third period to take a 3-2 lead.

All three goals came on power plays.

Standley Lake didn’t let Steamboat’s lead last, however. Andrew Garcia scored with 81 seconds remaining in the game to tie things up and force overtime.

The loss drops Steamboat to 1-10 on the season. It next plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday at home against Aspen.
