Win again just out of reach for Steamboat hockey

— Somehow, it was again close, but not quite enough for the Steamboat Springs High School hockey team on Friday night.

A late rally from their opponents beat the Sailors for the third time in as many games as the team dropped to 0-5.

This time it was Dakota Ridge, another road game, and two late goals, one at the end of the second and one in the third to catch, then beat Steamboat, 2-1.

It’s been tough, coach Chris Campanelli admitted, but far from devastating.

“These boys are working hard and they’re doing well,” he said. “This kids are playing fantastic for me and they’re making my job easy because their morale is so positive I’m not worrying about anything crumbling inside the locker room.”

Steamboat got an early goal Friday from Brandon Selby and strong play in goal from Jackson Draper.

“We felt like we had a really good chance,” Campanelli said. “In the third period we couldn’t get anything to go our way as far as capitalizing on some good opportunities, but the boys played well.”

Steamboat will take an other crack at that first win today against Regis Jesuit, which improved to 3-0 Friday with a 13-0 win against Kent Denver.
