Wildfire in Routt National Forest expected to burn throughout summer

Silver Creek Fire

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Fire officials believe it is going to take significant rain or maybe even snow to douse the Silver Creek Fire burning in Routt National Forest. As of Tuesday, the fire on Gore Mountain in Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area has burned about 250 acres and is growing.

“It looks like it’s picking up a bit,” U.S. Forest Service spokesman Aaron Voos said Tuesday.

Lightning is suspected of starting the fire that was first reported July 19. There are about 25 firefighters managing the blaze, but none of them are directly fighting the fire because the remote location with beetle-killed lodgepole pine trees is unsafe.

The focus for firefighters has been preparing Forest Service Road 100 (Buffalo Park Road) for the fire’s arrival with the hope the fire will not cross the road.

A large closure area has been established encompassing the entire Sarvis Creek Wilderness, including the Silver Creek and Sarvis trails. Voos said the closure was established because of the potential for the fire to grow.

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

“It’s in wilderness,” Voos said. “We knew we weren’t going to be able to put resources on the fire until it came out of the wilderness a ways and got to points where we could actually engage it.”

Voos said the Forest Service has been fielding a lot of calls from hunters who are planning hunts in the area and that there have been discussions about adjusting the size of the closure.

“In the same way we’re monitoring the fire, we’re monitoring the closure area, as well,” Voos said.

Fire officials are expecting the fire will burn throughout the summer.

“It definitely could be a long-duration fire,” Voos said.

Managing the fire has not yet been expensive.

“As far as fire costs go, this one has been fairly low because we haven’t had to put a lot of resources on it yet,” Voos said. “So far, most of the cost has been the prep of the 100 road.”
