Wharton to represent Sailors tennis in tournament finals Saturday

Ben Ingersoll

— The Steamboat Springs High School tennis team wrapped up Day 1 of its two-day match at Littleton with some impressive individual results.

Ben Wharton, the Sailors’ No. 3 singles player, advanced to Saturday’s finals. Head coach Don Toy said Steamboat stumbled out to a rough start, but the play of Wharton and a few others rallied the team in the latter part of the day.

“I’m really proud of him for being in the finals,” Toy said about Wharton. “He’s learning to become a tennis player. He’s a very good athlete.”

Troy DeJong, the Sailors’ No. 2 singles player, will compete in the third-place match Saturday morning, as well. Also playing from Steamboat is Toy’s No. 3 doubles team of Matthew White and Joe Borgerding, who will battle for the third-place prize.

The Sailors will take the court at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and should be wrapped up by 10 a.m., Toy said.
