Steamboat Springs — Spring may have arrived in the Yampa Valley, but local cyclists eager for the start of the Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series will have to wait an extra week.
Recent storms and sloppy trail conditions have convinced Town Challenge race director Gretchen Sehler to push the series’ first event, the Marabou Cross Country, from June 2 to June 9. The Thunderhead Hill Climb, set for June 16, still is scheduled for that date.
“Flexibility is the name of the game this time of the year,” Sehler said Friday.
The first race of the season will take place at Marabou Ranch on June 9. Sehler said this is one of the few times the public has a chance to use the trails on the privately owned property.
The trails will open to the public before the race for training.
Sehler said riders must check in and sign a waiver before riding the Marabou trials.
Those trails will be closed to the public once the race is complete.
“It’s a short window, but it’s also a great opportunity to ride and race on trails that we don’t normally have access to,” Sehler said.
Despite the opening-race delay, the remainder of the Town Challenge series is on track for another season.
The kick-off party is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sunpies Bistro. Riders can register for races at the party and get a special $100 offer for a Town Challenge season race pass. The kick-off party will be the only time that offer is available. Passes purchased at another or online at http://www.townchallenge.com will be at the regular prices.
There are seven races on this year’s Town Challenge schedule: the Marabou Cross Country, Thunderhead Hill Climb, Emerald Cross Country Slash and Burn, Sunshine Loop, Emerald Cross Country, Storm Peak Challenge and Mount Werner Cross Country.
