Volunteers showed up Wednesday at nonprofits across Routt County, ready to go to work making the communities they live in better.
“Every community in the country would love to have a day like this in their community, and they would love it,” said Jen Bruen, executive director of United Way of the Yampa Valley. “(Here in Steamboat Springs) we are lucky to have so many people that are willing to do this work to support nonprofits.”
This year, 339 people showed up for the annual Day of Caring which has been hosted by United Way of the Yampa Valley since 1998.
The half-day event connects volunteers with projects for nonprofits, government and low-income individuals in the community. This year the initiative completed 29 projects across Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Oak Creek and North Routt.
This United Way of the Yampa Valley expanded its Day of Caring efforts to Moffat County on Friday. On May 9, she said 50 volunteers in Moffat County completed five projects.
“We like to take on projects (that nonprofits) have been kind of waiting to do because they didn’t have the money, they didn’t have the time or they didn’t have the staff,” Bruen said. “That’s the kind of project you want for Day of Caring.”
