Volunteers needed for local meet

— With at least 13 teams coming to town for the Steamboat Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, local organizer Richard Atkinson is desperately searching for more than a few volunteers to help out.

“We need about 70 volunteers to pull this thing off,” he said.

The Peewee wrestling tournament is the biggest held in Steamboat Springs each year. Teams from Steamboat, Basalt, Parachute, Paonia, New Castle, Rifle, Meeker, Rangely, North Park, Kremmling, South Park, Moffat County and Hayden will be taking part in the one-day event, Atkinson said.

You don’t need to be an expert on the sport of wrestling to volunteer, he emphasized.

Most of the positions he needs filled are table personnel who will help watch clocks or fill out paperwork, concession workers, people to work at the door and runners for various other duties.

The tournament is expected to draw 400 children over the course of the day. The first session will be for first- through third-grade athletes. It will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday and is expected to take up most of the morning.

The second session is for the older athletes — fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders — and will run from noon until 3 p.m.

If you would like to volunteer or get more information, you can call Atkinson at 879-4976. Atkinson said the best time to call is between 8 and 10 p.m. each night. Volunteers can also call during the day and leave a name and number, so that organizers can reach them.
