Volunteers, food sought for holiday

Jamie Hallman

— The annual Thanksgiving dinner at the community center sponsored by the United Way and LIFT-UP Food Bank is looking for a few good cooks.

The dinner provides many local residents with a wonderful home-cooked meal on Thanksgiving Day, but this year organizers are concerned that not enough people have volunteered to bring pre-cooked and prepared food.

“We received almost no contributions,” said Dave Zabel, one of the volunteer organizers.

Zabel said that LIFT-UP organizers were able to receive enough food donations last year but are having a harder time this year.

David Freseman, director of LIFT-UP, said although few people have volunteered, he thinks more people will sign up to help with the event the closer it gets.

Food dishes needed for the event include turkey, gravy, stuffing, green beans or green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce or Jell-O molds and pie.

About 18 servings for eight to 10 people are needed for each food dish or item, Zabel said. So far, he said, only a few people have volunteered to prepare a turkey and other dishes.

“Food needs to be cooked and delivered hot,” Zabel said.

Zabel and his wife, Pat, will cook food for the event as well as take commitments from volunteers.

Prepared food for the event can be dropped off between 6 and 8 p.m. Nov. 21 or after 11 a.m. Nov. 22. Organizers for the event ask that all pre-cooked food is delivered in a disposable container.

The Thanksgiving dinner is open to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 22 at the community center.

“It provides for people in need, people who don’t have a place to go and helps bring the community together,” Freseman said.
