Volunteers dish up Community Christmas Dinner in Steamboat

— As snow blanketed Steamboat Springs on Thursday, about 100 volunteers made sure community members were well fed and jolly on Christmas.

Longtime Community Christmas Dinner kitchen manager Ray Wright ensured a steady stream of hot food was ready for the expected crowd of about 450 people. He paid careful attention to the gravy cooking on the stove in the Steamboat Springs Community Center.

“That’s the most important job here,” said Wright, who has worked every year at the dinner hosted by the Steamboat Springs Board of Realtors.

Helping in back was 23-year Steamboat resident Sam Taylor, who is semi-retired and regularly volunteers at community events.

“It’s what I do,” Taylor said. “I like volunteering, and this community has been very good to me. I love this place.”

Taylor was tasked with carving turkeys. It was something his dad always would do for the family, but throughout the years, he has mastered the skill while working at community dinners. Rip off the legs and wings, and then carve the breasts.

“You just get in there and make it presentable,” Taylor said. “There is not a lot to it. It’s just a guy thing.”

Outside on the serving line, 13-year-old Addie Hudson, of Denver, was volunteering with her family.

“We wanted to give back and do community service,” Addie said. “We just wanted to help. I think it’s really cool what they are doing.”

In addition to working at the Christmas dinner, Addie has been busy giving in other ways this holiday season. She handed out sandwiches and distributed gifts and gift certificates to the needy on Colfax Avenue in Denver.

After skiing with his dad, Jon Wade, in the morning, 11-year-old Alden was dishing out gravy next to his 9-year-old sister, Neve.

When Alden asked where people wanted their gravy, the response was usually “everywhere.”

“It’s always fun to see everybody,” Alden said.

Lorraine Morrison was the main organizer for this year’s dinner.

“As usual, we had about twice as many volunteers show up than expected,” Morrison said.
