Some of the trailers in Westland Mobile Home Park will be put to good use rather than being demolished. Developer Jim Cook has announced that at least five homes from the park will be transported to the Oglala Sioux Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Homes from the park will be taken to the reservation this month, at the expense of development group Riverwalk Steamboat, managed by Cook. The Pine Ridge Reservation has 1,700 homes for its 48,000 residents, with an unemployment rate of nearly 80 percent, according to statistics presented by Colorado Group Realty.

Today, the Steamboat Springs City Council takes a big first step toward allocating more than $47.5 million in projected expenditures for 2007. In an all-day public hearing at Centennial Hall, the council will review the proposed 2007 budget, a massive document prepared by City Manager Alan Lanning and Director of Financial Services Don Taylor. The budget includes funding requests from all city departments, including transportation, public safety, and parks, recreation and open space; capital projects including downtown improvements and the new community center; and numerous other city expenses.

In sports, it only took nine holes for Greeley Central’s Nick Umholtz to put a disappointing regional behind him and to prove that he is a contender for the 4A high school state golf title. Umholtz, who shot a 79 at the regional championship a few weeks ago, rolled through the first nine holes of the tournament at the Haymaker Golf Course on Monday. He made the turn at six strokes under par, and after a challenging back nine, finished the round five strokes under par at 67. The championship will continue today at Haymaker. The first players are scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m.
