A man was flown to Denver on Thursday afternoon after a frame wall fell on him at a construction site on Laurel Lane. Medics said the man sustained serious injuries.
Leaves are falling off cottonwood trees across Routt County, but not because it’s almost that time of year. A naturally occurring fungus called marssonina leaf spot is causing leaves to fall off cottonwoods prematurely. Up to 30 percent of cottonwoods in Routt County may be infected with the fungus, which creates black, brown or yellow spots on leaves. The fungus does not kill the trees.
City officials don’t appear ready to implement a safe harbor for restaurants, bars or liquor stores any time soon. On Thursday, the Steamboat Springs City Council, acting as the city’s liquor licensing authority, steered a discussion about creating a safe harbor for businesses that comply with the city’s liquor laws to a discussion about creating more regulations with which business owners must comply.
A new city bus route connecting Fish Creek Falls Road to Hilltop Parkway and U.S. Highway 40 will begin service Sunday. The Hilltop Connector was announced in July and originally scheduled to begin service in November as part of the city’s winter schedule. In sports, the Sailors’ football team held on for a late 9-7 win against Palisade Thursday. The golf team had a great day on the green at the Bulldog Invitational in Craig; the Sailors won with a team score of 227, beating Fruita-Monument by three strokes. And the soccer team pulled a thrilling 3-2 win Thursday in the league opener against Battle Mountain. David Comeau scored in the 78th minute to give the Sailors their first victory over the Huskies since 2003.
