Video: A first look at Friday’s headlines

City officials will soon begin advertising for a part-time staff member who will work toward making Steamboat Springs more bicycle-friendly. The employee will take on tasks including taking inventory of bike racks and storage units in Steamboat; conducting outreach to local businesses and schools to increase bicycle use by employees and students; working with law enforcement agencies to chart the rates and history of bicycle-related accidents; and working with city public works officials and engineers to create plans for bicycle lanes on city streets.

Scores on the Colorado Student Assessment Program were up across the board at the North Routt Community Charter School. Melinda Mawdsley has that story in today’s Today and on steamboatpilot.com.

Changes have been made in how coaches are paid in the Steamboat Springs School District. Most notably, Tier II coaches are now on the same salary schedule as their Tier I colleagues. In previous years, Tier II coaches could be paid at higher or lower rates because the district does not fund Tier II sports.



Apa Sherpa, who has climbed Mount Everest more times than any other person, will speak at the Steamboat Grand Resort Hotel for a benefit for two Sherpas who died on the world’s highest mountain this spring. Steamboat Springs Middle School teacher, Matt Tredway, who was a member of the Team No Limits expedition on Everest in May, was instrumental in arranging Apa Sherpa’s visit. He will speak at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Burgess Creek Room at the Steamboat Grand.

In sports, the Steamboat Springs football team is hunkering down to face Eagle Valley tonight in Steamboat. Eagle Valley is 0-2. Steamboat is 3-0. During half time tonight, Gardner Field will be rededicated. The field has new turf as well as a new entrance.

At 8 a.m. it was 51 degrees and the high will be 61 with scattered thunderstorms throughout the day. Looking ahead to the weekend, highs will be in the upper 50s with partly cloudy skies on Saturday and mostly sunny on Sunday.
