Veterans Day offers parade of Routt County events to honor those who served
It will be a week filled with quilt presentations, a gathering at Casey’s Pond, school visits and plenty of appreciation as Routt County marks Veterans Day by honoring those who served in the armed forces.
“We’re keeping it very simple this year,” said Jim Stanko, local veterans services officer. “Basically, because we have four school programs this year that we get to go to. We will kick things off by honoring 16 veterans with quilts on Thursday night, and we want to remind people that Veterans Day is an important holiday to remember the service of all veterans.”
Events will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center with a presentation of quilts by the Delectable Mountain Quilters Guild. Veterans Zack Alexander, Janna Ashton, Gary Burkholder, Gerry Denofsy, Ed Duncan, Chris Emmery, Stacie Fain, Fred Garrison, Paula Gregory, Casey Hopkins, Tina Kyprios, Ron Shively, Rob Struble, Jimmy Taylor and Dick Taylor.
On Friday, the veterans will start the day at 8:30 a.m. with a school program at Steamboat Christian Center, followed by a 10 a.m. gathering at Casey’s Pond to have coffee and doughnuts with veterans living in the Casey’s Pond senior living community.
Events will continue Monday with Veterans Day school visits at 8:45 a.m. at Strawberry Park Elementary and 1 p.m. at Soda Creek Elementary. Stanko recommends showing up a few minutes early to get a good seat. Stanko said all the school programs are very good and are the foundation of the Veterans Day celebration.
“This fifth grade puts on a terrific program to honor not only local veterans, but family members that are veterans,” Stanko said. “The program really gives meaning to what Veterans Day is about.”
The day will end at 6 p.m. with a gathering at West End Grill featuring a slide show on the branches of military for veterans and their spouses.
The celebration will come to an end at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when students at Sleeping Giant School invite veterans in for breakfast followed by a presentation at 9:15 a.m.
“Sleeping Giant is putting on the Tuesday program to give veterans more opportunity to attend the Strawberry Park and Soda Creek programs on Veterans Day,” Stanko said. “The students have worked on a great program.”
