Vandals strike Sanctuary again

Doug Crowl

— Vandals tipping over toilets at the Sanctuary struck again last weekend after the company’s owner offered a reward for their capture.

Officer Bill Stucker at the Steamboat Springs Police Department reported that five or six portable toilets were tipped over at the Sanctuary Saturday evening. He responded to the call at 6:39 p.m.

After about 30 toilets were tipped over at construction sites in the same area two weekends ago, Steve Weinland, owner of Royal Flush Industries, said he would give $500 for information leading to the arrest of the toilet tippers.

Since August, Weinland said people have been pushing over his toilets at the Sanctuary, a new subdivision on the very north end of Steamboat Boulevard near the ski area. Weinland said he thought it was just pranksters at first; however, because the events have been happening repeatedly, and because some of the toilets had paint poured in them and construction equipment had been damaged by vandals in that area before, he is now considering it is someone with a grudge against the building going on there.

Weinland is feeling a financial burden because of the vandalism. He told the Steamboat Pilot and Today last week that the toilet tipping is taking a toll on his employees and his pocketbook.

The Steamboat Springs Police Department is investigating the events, but Stucker said there are no leads on who the toilet tippers are.
