Vail joins list of open ski areas during weekend; Steamboat is next

Steamboat Today

— As the Steamboat and Aspen ski areas prepare to open their seasons Wednesday, skiers at Vail already were carving a couple of fresh inches of snow during the weekend after the ski area opened and dedicated its new Gondola One on Friday.

The Vail Daily reported a fresh inch of snow had fallen between 5 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Sunday on the Born Free Trail, the only trail open at Vail. Although the new gondola was dedicated, skiers were limited to Chair 8 during the weekend.

Across the Central Rockies in the past 48 hours, Colorado Ski Country USA was reporting an inch of new snow at A-Basin, Loveland and Winter Park. All three of those ski areas reported an 18-inch base at mid-mountain.

Steamboat officials were expected to announce opening day terrain Monday or Tuesday. The absence of advantageous snowmaking conditions during the mild weekend that just passed strongly suggests Steamboat would open the Christie Peak Express serving trails like Sitz and Vogue for Scholarship Day to benefit the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's competitive skiing and snowboard programs.
